(Memphis)— Tuesday marks the one year anniversary of the shooting death of an officer, killed in the line of duty.Officer Timothy Warren died last year after being shot, responding to a domestic violence all at the downtown Doubletree Hotel. Now, his family is working towards protecting other officers from on the job danger.
It’s Officer Tim Warren’s presence that his widow, Betsy Warren, says can’t be replaced.
“We really miss him and being able to play.” said Warren.
A year after her husband’s tragic death, she and her two children plan to spend the anniversary passing out bottles of water to help the homeless beat the heat.
“We can’t have him back, but we can focus on having the rest of the city safe.” expressed Warren.
That also includes keeping those who protect us, safe from the blazing sun. Officers with tattoos must wear long sleeve shirts to be in uniform, even though we’ve spent days with near record-breaking heat.
“Forget about the tattoos, short sleeves are better than having a heat stroke.” said Warren.
Last summer, A Memphis police officer did die from heat while on the job. Following the death, police officers were able to wear athletic sleeves to keep cool. But Warren wants something more concrete and permanent.
“I’ve already asked Director Armstrong, he said he is willing to work with us if we can come up with something that is uniform. We can work with that..” said Michael Williams, with the Memphis Police Association.
It’s a mission Warren says her husband would work for if he were still alive.
“I don’t want to see another death. These officers put their lives on the line. My husband went to work every day to make sure somebody got home. He didn’t make it safe.”
