(Memphis) New information about the 911 call made by a Memphis mother who admitted to stabbing her two children.
She apparently told police, “The voices made me do it.”
According to the affidavit obtained by News Channel 3, Jamina Briggs called 911 at 9:30 Wednesday night.
She told them she was a paranoid schizophrenic.
Briggs then admitted she stabbed her two kids.
When officers arrived at her home on Tillman Street, they say she had blood on her hands and told them she was sorry.
Neighbors who knew Briggs said it was apparent she suffered from a mental disorder.
“She just wasn’t right,” Debra Reynolds said. “It was like she was lost. Her mind was gone.”
Police found 23-month-old Jeremiah and 6-year-old Nicholas, both stabbed numerous times.
They were transported to the hospital, but their little lives couldn’t be saved.
“I feel bad because maybe there was some denial of mental illness. I don’t know but there should be more focus on people who are mentally ill,” Kimberly Bowden said.
Neighbors say those kids should never have been with her last night.
They removed Nicholas from her home last year, and her 9-year-old daughter was taken from her in 2007. Both were placed in the care of a family member.
DCS said it didn’t even know she had a 23-month-old.
“It’s like the system has failed,” Bowden said.
“She shouldn’t have had them,” Reynolds added.
Now neighbors are left with questions.
“I would like to know who brought the kids over there,” Reynolds said.
But they know those answers won’t bring back the two lives tragically lost.
Briggs is charged with two counts of first degree murder.
She is held in the Shelby County jail without bond. She is scheduled to be in court Friday morning at 8:30.
