(Tupelo, MS) Kenny Steen heard the commotion from his crosstown pawn store just after 3 Monday afternoon.
“We heard some, just a real, ‘burr, burr’ real fast, so we came out and there was cop cars coming they stopped right here in the street.”
That ‘burr’ sound reportedly came from a machine gun that killed Tupelo Police Sergeant Gale Stauffer and seriously wounded another officer.
“Soon as I came out, there was an officer actually falling, going down,” said Steen.
He saw two huge pools of blood on the pavement where the officers fell.
By Christmas Eve, black paint covered those blood-soaked spots.
The whole scene might not have happened if it hadn’t been for a train that stopped traffic at Gloster and Main Streets and backed up cars for blocks.
That cornered the shooters within minutes of their robbery of the BancorpSouth branch a couple of blocks away.
It also cornered the cops who blocked in the suspected getaway vehicle and moved in on the suspects, who came out of their car shooting.
Law enforcement sources tell us it’s believed the robbers had AK-47 assault rifles.
Investigators continued combing the area Tuesday looking for more clues.
“The law enforcement is leaving no stone unturned. They’re out following every lead and certainly just pray that they fugitives can be captured,” said Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton.
A witness reported a suspicious car up the road in New Albany. Investigators converged on a house there, but let their person of interest go after hours of questioning.
Meantime, local businesses have contributed reward money.
There’s now more than $140,000 in reward money for tips leading to the alleged robbers who gunned down the two Tupelo officers.
Meantime, the shock still hasn’t worn off here.
“It’s nothing like Tupelo usually. This is a very quiet town,” said Steen.
And on Christmas Eve, it’s a little more quiet in Tupelo as people keep their doors locked and keep looking over their shoulders.
