MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Chisca Hotel downtown caught fire Tuesday evening.

A witness saw flames coming from the seventh floor, and because the building is so tall, the department classified it as a two-alarm fire.

When a WREG team arrived on the scene, no smoke or flames were visible. The building’s exterior appeared undamaged.

The small fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes. Firefighters then double-checked the building to ensure everything was extinguished.

No word yet on the extent of the damage or what caused the fire.

A firefighter was treated for chest pains.

The vacant hotel, located at South Main Street and Linden Avenue, is undergoing renovations.

The plan is to transform the hotel, which was built in 1913, into an apartment building with more than 150 units and commercial space.
