GERMANTOWN, Tenn. – Three armed robberies in Germantown in less than a week has homeowners on edge.

Police there have also beefed up patrols.

The most recent robbery happened Friday night in a gated subdivision off Poplar.

Safety experts warn just because you live in a gated community it doesn’t mean you won’t be targeted by criminals.

“”A gated community in and of itself does not guarantee safety.  We’ve had many incidents where people in gated communities are subjected to robbery in their driveway or home invasion,” said Buddy Chapman with Crime Stoppers.

Police said Friday night someone broke into a home in the Nottoway subdivision and robbed a couple of their jewelry and cash.

In 2013, optometrist, Burton Bodan was robbed and badly beaten in the driveway of his East Memphis home, also in a gated community.

Chapman believes in that case someone followed Boden home.

“I know when I give speeches in gated communities I always tell them that if you come through the gate don’t just keep going, but stop and see if someone is behind you. If someone follows you through then don’t go home. Go somewhere else and see if they continue to follow you,” said Chapman.

In the Nottoway robbery it does not appear the robber followed anyone inside the gate of the subdivision because he didn’t have a car.

In fact, he made the victims drive him to another location so he could get away.

It’s possible he climbed over a fence or wall to get inside.

“I don’t know if these people had an alarm system, but I would advise anyone whether they live in a gated community or not to have some sort of basic alarm system,” said Chapman.

And Chapman say whether or not you live in a gated community, always be aware of your surroundings.
