MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police briefly detained four Oakhaven High School students Friday for questioning, after a fight.

Shelby County Schools confirmed four or five students were involved in a fight Friday morning at 9 a.m. Two students had minor injuries, but no one had to go to the hospital.

At the scene, MPD told WREG the students would not be arrested.

“The school system just needs to get better,” said the father of one of the boys allegedly involved.

The man took his son home for the day. He said the school will give him the details of his son’s suspension Monday.

WREG also spoke with Tomika Brown who came to pick up her daugher, Jozalyn, from school. Her daughter said she inhaled pepper spray fumes and felt chest pains.

“I’m sick and tired of it. So, to me, it seems like the school is not really protecting their kids like they’re supposed to,” Brown said.

“There was kids punching and running,” Jozalyn Jones said. She said she does not know what the fight was about.

A school resource officer told WREG no pepper spray was used.

Classes continued as usual after the fight.
