MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Perfect attendance in Shelby County Schools is almost unheard of.
But just over 200 kids earned the bragging rights this year and got rewarded with a brand new bike.
Unfortunately, nearly half of them went unclaimed this past weekend when the D.A.s office planned to give them away.
Wednesday, officers from the Community Outreach Program, loaded up the remaining bikes and took them to these kids houses.
This year 211 kids had perfect attendance.
That’s down from the 236 kids last year.
Donors kicked in the money to buy the bikes from Walmart on Elvis Presley Boulevard.
They said it’s an incentive to keep kids on the right track.
The kids who saw the police knocking on their doors were very surprised.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen. I thought I was in trouble or something,” said soon to be 8th grader Darien Watson.
“Last year we had so many unclaimed bikes, and we wanted to do something moving forward to address that problem,” Megan Pietrowski with the DA Truancy Office explained.
The bikes also come with brand new helmets to keep the kids safe.
