MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are investigating a two-year-old found dead at a home in the 3400 block of Fairoaks Avenue.

Police said the call came in around 11:05 a.m Saturday morning to assist the Memphis Fire Department Paramedics of a two-year-old not breathing, no pulse and unresponsive.

Screams of hurt and pain filled the North Memphis street after family members said 2-year-old Jermyle Campbell stopped breathing.

“He gone. He’s only two. He just learned how to walk,” Velaizjah Parker said.

Paramedics attempted to perform CPR on the child.

The child was transported to Le’Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition where he later died.

“When I found out I passed — I passed out, and I stayed by his side until they came to pick him up,” Jacqueline Annette Campbell, Jermyle’s grandmother, said.

Campbell said her grandson was not beaten or bruised and claimed reports of no air conditioning and no food in the home were not true.

“The only thing they’re saying — the only thing they know right now is that he stopped breathing, but they’re doing an autopsy now and we will know in 2 days what really happened,” Campbell said.

As officers questioned Jermyle’s mother, Raven Campbell, about what happened, WREG’s camera captured Department of Children’s Services investigators stopping by the home and talking to neighbors.

Some neighbors couldn’t believe what the family was going through.

“I’ll give them a hug and I’ll just like say I don’t want to talk about it cause I don’t want to see y’all cry,” Mackenzie Dale, who is friends with two other children living at the home, said.

Police said this case is an ongoing investigation.

Family members are planning a vigil at the home on Friday at 8:00 p.m.
