MEMPHIS, Tenn. — She didn’t have a care in the world.

On Thursday, Zimm the monkey explored new territory at the Memphis Zoo and word spread like wildfire.

“We were in the panda section and they said ‘quick get in doors! There’s a monkey on the loose,'” said Rebecca Maury.

Zookeepers haven’t figured out how the three-year-old monkey got out of her exhibit but admitted they weren’t surprised.

“She’s an independent little girl,” one Zookeeper told WREG.

One visitor caught the ten-pound monkey scaling the wall of her exhibit just before she made her exit.

Despite the sudden surprise, zookeepers were ready.

“They were on golf carts moving everywhere,” said one guest.

Zookeepers immediately grabbed large nets and began a chase through the east side of the zoo.

They spent hours trying to corner her.

“If you’ve ever seen a Border Collie corral sheep that is an excellent analogy to talk about how we kind of get her back in,” said Laura Doty.

Meanwhile, staff told visitors to clear the area.

Though the zoo said no one was ever in any danger, visitors were forced to move to exhibits on the west side of the zoo.

Some visitors left this evening with stories to tell for days, but many were just bummed they didn’t get to see Zimm run free.

“No, we didn’t see the monkey!” said Betti Derington laughing.
