MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Schools launched its brand new online registrations system Monday, with the hopes it will send families “online” and not keep them “in line.”
“We’ve gone from all paper to no paper,” said SCS Director of Attendance and Discipline Angela Hargrave.
This was the first year the district did enrollment entirely online.
SCS opened its doors for a kick-off event where some parents said they preferred the online system to showing up at their kids schools to enroll, like they used to.
“Yes, it’s very easy, and it’s going by much smoother. So, I really like this,” said parent Shanesica Johnson.
Others disagreed, saying they experienced trouble with SNAPCODES.
That was what parents entered online to begin the registration process.
“I think this is causing even more problems than how it used to be,” said high school student Fernando Espinoza.
The district said it sent SNAPCODES to parents.
Hargrave said it was possible emails might have ended up in junk mail.
Some people, like Espinoza, told WREG they checked their mailbox and their email inbox but have not received anything.
“They told me to go down to the registration office,” Espinoza said.
Espinoza came with his family to the kick-off.
He said he could not find help.
“All we’re going to do is wait to go to school next week, so they can help us out,” he said.
Others called with the same problem.
“They should be able to get them to someone who can assist. Because of the volume, because there’s so much excitement about it, we do have a lot of people calling and coming in. So, they may have to try back,” Hargrave said.
Schools open next week to help out and registration runs through August 4.
The district said as of 1 p.m., more than 7,000 people registered online.
The district said people may visit the following locations for SNAPCODE assistance:
- Board of Education, 160 South Hollywood
- SCS Welcome Center, 2687 Avery Avenue
- Technology Training Center, 3772 Jackson Avenue
- Grays Creek, 2800 Grays Creek, Arlington
- NE Regional Office, 920 S. Highland St.
