HERNANDO, Miss. — DeSoto County law enforcement swarmed Hernando, even calling in a helicopter and a K-9 unit, as news of an escapee broke.
Jay C. Moyer was about to be taken into custody when he ran from deputies at the Hernando Courthouse on Tuesday.
Moyer was in drug court for a weekly appearance when prosecutors learned he had a bench warrant.
He ran from the courtroom before being taken into custody.
Sheriff’s deputies are searched the area around the courthouse, but after just a couple hours, the Sheriff’s Office called off the search because it said Moyer is not a violent criminal.
Moyer lives in Olive Branch, and Hernando court officials told WREG he may turn up there.
But no one at either the Hernando or the Olive Branch police departments returned calls to say whether they’re actively looking for him.
