MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A sad sight welcomed guests to The New Daisy on Tuesday.
The Department of Revenue officially locked the doors of the theatre.
A notice was posted on the doors that stated the property had been seized by the state after the owners had failed to pay their state taxes.
According to Paul Morris of the Downtown Memphis Commission, the state showed up unannounced.
Neither the owners or the City of Memphis were notified prior, which Morris said should not have been the case.
Morris said it’s possible the state will reopen in time for the show on Wednesday, but he has not heard a confirmation of that yet.
Sounds like State will reopen New Daisy in time for the show tomorrow. Unconfirmed report but hopeful.

The state showed up unannounced this morning on Beale Street with chains, padlocks and signs to post on the New Daisy. Tax man don't play.

The City of Memphis owns the building that houses the New Daisy, but as the city's manager of Beale Street I got no notice from the state.

I spoke with the new owners of the tenant, and they report no notice from the state either.

I remember from law school that the state is supposed to provide notice and due process before taking property.
