GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Shortly after a Germantown officer was sentenced to a five-day-suspension for incidents in which he reportedly acted inappropriately, WREG obtained dash camera footage of one of them. The dash cam video was from September, when Officer Chris Torrence reportedly took things too far outside a Fresh Market. “Get out of the car. What’s going on tonight?” Torrence can be heard asking in the video. Torrence told police a couple was asleep inside, with three kids in the back. He approached the car, believing it to be suspicious. Torrence cuffed a man, and said he was being detained for child endangerment and possible DUI. Torrence’s police dog alerted on the car. Officers searched the car and found marijuana residue but no substantial amount of drugs. An investigation ruled that Torrence acted incorrectly in several parts of the interaction. Torrence allegedly told police he removed all three kids from the car before the police dog investigated. The video only showed one baby outside the car. Police also said Torrence had no probable cause to search the car or take the man into custody. The investigation found Torrence told investigators he cuffed the man, because people under the influence can act violently when they wake up. In this case, police said the man did not act violently and Torrence took it too far. The investigation also found Torrence did not complete in-the-field tests correctly. The couple in the video was not charged, and they were released. Torrence even reportedly kept them there for two hours. WREG went by Torrence’s home on Tuesday, but no one answered the door. He’s on Family Medical Leave from the end of October until December 29, then he will complete his five-day-suspension. His neighbor could not believe he was accused of acting inappropriately on the job. She said he has helped her on several occasions. The GPD said Torrence was suspended five days, because that is the maximum amount an inspector can suspend someone. This was reportedly Torrence’s first complaint. Police documents show Torrence is also accused of pulling his gun and pointing it at a man’s head at another traffic stop, when a man told him he was armed and removed the weapon. He also reportedly pepper sprayed a man being questioned for drunk driving.
