MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Officials from U.S. Housing and Urban Development are in Memphis.
They will host series of meetings to assist residents of Warren and Tulane with relocation.
HUD recently abated its Housing Assistance Payment Contract with GMF-PAC, the non-profit that owns Warren and Tulane.
Residents will get Section 8 vouchers that are “portable”, so they can move anywhere.
HUD’s Regional Director, Ed Jennings, along with relocation and voucher specialists will be at the hour-long sessions to answer residents’ questions.
The meeting will focus on several issues including:
- How relocation will be handled
- When vouchers will be “on the ground”
- Time frame for relocation
A HUD spokesperson told WREG residents are typically given 60 days for relocation. However, in this case, it’s being extended to six months.
The spokesperson reiterated the fact that because this is a special circumstance, HUD will work with residents and allow them to take as much time as necessary to relocate.
Residents must also re-certify as part of the process, so HUD officials will discuss that at the meetings as well.
GMF-PAC is the housing non-profit run by Global Ministries Foundation and Richard Hamlet.
The group has been under intense scrutiny since last year when residents complained about a number of problems at the properties.
Warren and Tulane failed recent HUD inspections. HUD sent GMF-PAC a Notice of Default in May of 2015 regarding the properties, then pulled funding earlier this month.
