MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people are charged with murder, accused of killing a man whom they tried to rob at gunpoint in January.
On Tuesday, a Shelby County grand jury indicted Devonta Vaughn and DeMarco McKinley on charges of first-degree murder, criminal attempted first-degree murder and employment of a firearm with intent to commit a felony.
Police nabbed the men thanks to a tip sent in anonymously to the CrimeStoppers hotline, 528-CASH.
The caller said Vaughn was one of four men involved in killing Lonnie Ludvigson.
Police investigated and confirmed the information. The investigation also led to McKinley as a suspect.
Police arrested Vaughn Tuesday. McKinley is in custody in Dallas and will be extradited to Memphis, police said.
The caller will receive a $13,500 reward for the successful tip. An anonymous donor and U-Ship contributed to the reward.
Ludvigson, who was a Desert Storm veteran and cancer survivor from Iowa, was traveling on business and only planned to be in Memphis for less than 24 hours.
Police said he was sitting in his car near the home he was staying at in the 700 block of Prescott Street when four masked men came up to him and demanded money at gunpoint. He tried to run but was shot and killed.
A pedestrian witnessed the crime and exchanged gunfire with the suspects, who then fled the scene, police said.
