MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The woman who allegedly took a baby from a daycare without authorization is in police custody.

During a news conference Thursday evening, the Memphis Police Department said the unidentified woman was taken into custody shortly after they received a call stating the 7-month-old A’Lelah LaShun Fentress had been found in the 2500 block of Trisha around 7:30 p.m.

The woman had reportedly left the child on a doorstep inside an apartment complex before taking off on foot.

Authorities said she would be taken in for questioning before being booked into the Shelby County Jail. Once they have charged her, they will be releasing more information.

A’Lelah was taken from Elite Academy in the 3400 block of Frayser-Raleigh Road Thursday afternoon. When family arrived several hours later to pick her up, the child was gone.

The Memphis Police issued a City Watch and were about to issue an Amber Alert when they received the tip she had been found.

Officers wouldn’t say what the daycare told them about releasing the child to the suspect.

It’s unclear if anyone at the daycare will face any charges.

This is an ongoing investigation.
