COMO, Miss. — A man is dead and an officer injured after a shooting with law enforcement and a wreck that backed up traffic for miles along Interstate 55 in Tate County on Sunday. Warren Strain with Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the incident began around 3 p.m. when an officer attempted to pull over a man on I-55 near the Panola/Tate County line. He resisted, a chase ensued, and the man lost control and crashed his car. The suspect then got out of the car and started exchanging gunfire with officers. An officer shot at the suspect. The suspect was shot dead, he said. One officer was also hit, receiving a non-life threatening injury. Truck drivers at the scene told WREG they heard 30-50 gunshots. Truck driver, Larry Williams, was just a few feet away from all of the action, and he ended up crashing his 18-wheeler truck after being startled by what he saw. “Police officers had their guns pointed at the hood of the car,” said Williams. “I was afraid guns were going to fly and in a little while they did.” It turns out that William was pulling up on the tail end of the chase. A silver vehicle could be seen in the median, along with a wrecked tractor-trailer on the other side of the interstate and a heavy police presence from several agencies. Williams says all of the chaos cost him some time on his journey. “I need to be up on the road. I was supposed to be in Indianapolis,” said Williams. “I am going to be late.” Many drivers sat in stand still traffic for hours before they could figure out what caused all of the commotion. MBI is investigating. Officers from Senatobia, Panola County, Hernando and Mississippi Highway Patrol were involved in the pursuit. In a separate incident in September, an armed man led police on a chase that ended in a standoff on I-55.
