MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A little over a month after her arrest for the murder of her ex-husband, former Memphis Grizzly Lorenzen Wright, Sherra Wright is back in Memphis to face charges.

Wright, 46, was taken into custody in Riverside County, California the week before Christmas, seven years after the retired NBA player was found shot to death.

After a nearly 1,800-mile trip in a prisoner transport bus, Wright now sits in Shelby County Jail East, the county’s women’s jail.

The bus left California Friday and Wright was booked into the jail just before 11 p.m. Saturday.

“They said it could take four to five days to get here, so actually, she got here a lot quicker than we thought,” said Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Earle Farrell.

Last month, Wright was arrested and indicted on several charges, including first-degree murder, along with Billy Ray Turner, 46, a man she went to church with in Collierville.

At the time, Lorenzen Wright’s mother told WREG she didn’t know who turner was or why he would kill her son.

“That was my first time ever hearing of a Billy Turner when this happened,” Deborah Marion said in a December interview. “I have never heard of him.”

But she said she always knew her ex-daughter-in law was involved.

“Didn’t nobody want to listen to us, but see, everything is coming to the light now,” she said.

Wright is being kept away from the other inmates until a mental and physical exam can be completed, at which point she’ll be put into the general population with everyone else, Farrell said.

Investigators said Sunday they have no reason to believe Wright will be a target or a threat to anyone else.

“As with all of our inmates, we watch over them and are very careful with all of them. They’re in our care,” Farrell said.

The high-profile case was unsolved until last November, when investigators found the alleged murder weapon in a Mississippi lake.

“The weapon was key,” Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings said in a press conference last month, the day after Wright was taken into custody. “Sometimes you’re missing one little piece of the puzzle.”

There hasn’t been a court date set for Wright yet.

Farrell said the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office will be in charge of handling Wright’s future court dates.
