MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A baby is fighting for its life after the pregnant mother was involved in an overnight shooting on I-40.
Police say just after midnight Saturday a pregnant woman was riding along 1-40 headed West toward Austin Peay Highway.
A group of men pulled up rolled down the window of their dark Impala and fired a shot, hitting the expecting mother.
Police have not said if the mother was the intended target or what led up to the shooting, leaving those like Terrence Beasley who work nearby guessing.
“Everyone has guns and they are just shooting them and they are not hitting who they are aiming at,” Beasley said. “I thought maybe it was a road rage incident.”
The mother was taken to the hospital after the shooting where she gave birth to a child who is now fighting to live.
“It’s terrible how people have no thought for life anymore. They don’t care about your life or their life either,” Beasley said.
Meanwhile, there’s not yet an explanation as to how and why bullets rang out on the expressway or even who pulled the trigger.
“They’ll just shoot and bullets have no name,” Beasley said.
Beasley says it makes no sense for a baby to be caught in the crossfire, and hopes the baby pulls through.
For him the only thing left for the triggerman to do is surrender.
“Accept the consequences for it and turn yourself in,” Beasley said.
