COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. — An officer with the Memphis Police Department was relieved of duty pending an investigation after he was arrested following an accident Thursday.

Memphis Police confirm 52-year-old Ozell Toles was in a one-car accident at Byhalia Road north of Frank in Collierville.

A Collierville police report states that Toles was unsteady on his feet, smelled of alcohol and “was initially unaware that his truck had struck a light pole and a tree.” He first told officers he was coming from Downtown Memphis, then said he was coming from Kroger in Collierville.

Police say he refused a blood alcohol test but told him he’d taken a pain medication and consumed alcohol.

Toles was charged with DUI, reckless driving, a traffic offense, not having insurance and tampering with evidence, according to Collierville Police.

Toles was hired by The Memphis Police Department in 2001.
