MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A family member of the two victims shot Wednesday night in Frayser says one of them, a 14-year-old boy, was placed on life support at a local hospital.

The teenager’s grandmother,  Diana Slaughter, identified him as David Fulton Vongphachanh. She said Friday that the teenager is brain dead.

She said the boy’s father was still in the hospital as of Friday and had undergone a six hour surgery on Thursday. She said they are waiting for her son to recover before making any more decisions for the teen.

“It’s tragic. I’ve never lost a grandson. I’ve never lost a child. He was a straight A and B student. He had his whole life ahead of him,” she said.

Police said the shooting happened in the 3400 block of Ardmore Street in Frayser just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Slaughter said her 34-year-old son, Vongphachanh’s father, was rushed to Regional Medical Center while the 14-year-old was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

Slaughter said she believes her grandson’s friend is responsible for his death. She says her son got home around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

“As soon as he got inside the house he was shot, and I think my grandson was already shot.”

She believes whoever shot the father and son did more than that.

“His cellphone is missing. His Xbox is missing.”

Police said an 11-year-old juvenile was taken into custody in the shooting.
