HORN LAKE, Miss. — Two people were killed and another person was seriously hurt in an an apparent home invasion shooting Thursday night at a Horn Lake apartment complex, police said.
Captain Joseph Keene with the Horn Lake Police Department said officers responded to a disturbance call at The Desoto Apartments off Goodman Road near I-55 around 9:30 p.m., and found three people who had been shot at least once.
The first victim was found outside Building 700 with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital and later upgraded from critical condition. Police have not identified him.
Keene said the other two victims were dead. The male victim was identified as Antonio L Gipson, 28, and the female victim as Serena S Madkins, 27.
An infant child was also found in the apartment unharmed and was later turned over to the victim’s extended family, police said.
A huge crowd of people watched as police investigated, wheeling two bodies out of an apartment on stretchers and shielding the public’s view with a sheet.
“I was totally shocked,” neighbor Wade Stanphill said.
“Yea, I got kids. It’s pretty nerve-wracking,” another neighbor said. “I heard a loud bang. Got up, walked back there to make sure the kids didn’t knock over something… Next thing I know, I see blue lights sitting outside. Walk outside and there’s a bunch of cops everywhere.”
Police didn’t respond to multiple requests Friday morning asking for updates on the case and whether investigators are still searching for suspects.
Neighbors, however, are talking. They say they’re hearing it happened when someone broke into the apartment, shooting and killing a couple who lived there and shooting someone else who may have been visiting.
“Everybody’s got their own ideas, and other than that, I don’t have a clue what’s going on,” Stanphill said.
Police haven’t confirmed that information, only telling WREG that the investigation is in the “very early stages.”
