MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was killed and another transported to the hospital following a shooting in South Memphis.

It happened in the 1400 block of Effie Road around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

When police arrived they found a man lying on the ground at Elliston and Corry suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced deceased.

A second victim was taken by private vehicle to a nearby fire station for help. Kim Nelson identified the victim as her son, Darrias Brown. She says she received word that her son was going for help moments after he left her home.

“He was out here with his brothers. Somebody was shooting on this side, then they came down this way shooting,” she said. “It was a phone call from my nephew, so I left here and went straight to the fire department.”

Nelson says that phone call coupled with seeing the crime scene has her reliving pain so severe that she struggles to put it into words.

“I’m thinking all kinds of things in my head, because again I have a son that was killed already.”

You heard right.

Nelson experienced a similar situation eight years ago in the same neighborhood. She lost her son, Donte Nelson, when he was shot one block away. Now she’s counting her blessings that she avoided having to bury another son.

Officers say three others escaped unscathed.

No suspect information has been released.
