Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings said Purple Haze needs to “shut down or straighten up,” a day after nine people were injured in an early-morning shooting at the notorious nightclub near Beale Street.

Law enforcement and officials from Memphis, Shelby County and the region honored fallen police officers in a special ceremony Friday. 

The man accused of going on a violent rampage that included shooting several people, then hitting and killing a Memphis Police officer on Beale Street last summer went before a judge Tuesday.

Joshua Walton died Friday, according to Serenity Funeral Home, which is handling the services.

“These men and women knew the potential dangers of their chosen profession, yet they knew at a moment’s notice their lives could be taken and the lives of their loved ones changed forever,” said Director Michael Rallings.

Memphis Police Lt. Andre Pruitt is joining Los Angeles police biking across the country to honor officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
