The parents of five children now in state custody after a traffic stop and misdemeanor charge appeared in court Monday morning.

According to the affidavit, the traffic stop was for having dark-tinted windows and using the left lane without actively passing.

Thirty-five days into her new role as the head of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, Margie Quin says children in state care are sleeping on office floors and her staff is “traumatized.”

In a letter addressed to Governor Bill Lee, 11 Democratic state legislators say it is “simply cruel” for the state to not take immediate action to reform the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services.

The issues facing the Department of Children’s Services in Tennessee are nothing new. Republicans say the issue is already being worked on. Democrats are calling for executive action.
