A Virginia state senator has been charged with two felonies for actions at a Confederate monument that was destroyed on June 10 in the city of Portsmouth.

Some professors say the university should rename its journalism school for an African-American journalist who crusaded against lynching.

“No child should be walking down the hall or in a locker room and be accosted with a noose around their neck,” president Derrick Johnson said Monday during a news conference in Wiggins.

“These monuments were often used to promote an ideology known as the ‘Lost Cause,’ which claimed that the Confederacy had been established to defend states’ rights and that slavery was not the principal cause of the Civil War,” it will say.

Harris pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor charge of using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students and employees

He faces up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000

A federal grand jury indicted Graeme Phillip Harris on one count of conspiracy to violate civil rights and one count of using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students because of their race or color.
