CRENSHAW, Miss. — Crenshaw Police said that a mass shooting happened Sunday night at an apartment complex in Crenshaw, Mississippi, a tiny town of just a few hundred people about 50 miles south of Memphis.
The Quitman County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that two were killed and three others were injured.
Police reported earlier that three were killed but authorities later clarified the number of victims.
The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. outside at the Marie Lyles Meadows apartments on Jones Street, the Quitman County Sheriff said.
Two of the victims who died have been identified by the Quitman County Sheriff as 24-year-old Derrick Small Jr. and 19-year-old Deshun Anderson.
Two males and a 19-year-old woman were taken to Regional One in Memphis, according to Quitman Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators found between 60 to 100 rounds fired from multiple firearms throughout the apartment complex. The hunt for the shooters is now underway.
Small’s father, who shares the same name, said his son was one of 10 children. Seeing him unresponsive was a living nightmare, he said.
“He was laying in the hallway, laying on his side. They wouldn’t let me get to him,” Small said. “Let me hold my son, let me hold my son.”
Small called the shooting a cowardly act, and said he will have to learn how to deal with the heartache.
“I should have been there. It should have been me or something instead of him,” he said.
Other family members also shared in the heartache.
“It makes me feel numb,” said Bobby Parks, Small’s cousin. “Driving home last night, I shed a couple of tears.”
