OLIVE BRANCH, Miss – One person was shot during a carjacking at the Walmart in Olive Branch on Goodman Road Sunday, police say.

Police said three suspects approached the victim and demanded car keys. Shots were fired during the altercation, injuring the victim.

The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle, police say.

Dave Chism watched the scary situation go down. Passing through town, several tires blew out on his RV. He was waiting for help from several hours away.

“I figured the safest place to be would be a lit up Walmart parking lot,” he said.

But it quickly turned dangerous as Chism heard the commotion outside his RV.

“Next thing I know I just see a guy running and I hear pow, pow, pow and people scattering, running everywhere. It was then that I realized it was gunshots,” he said.

He said the carjackers shot a woman and his first instinct was to go out there and help her.

“I put on my shoes and went up to help her, but there was really nothing I could do. There was already someone there holding pressure on the wound,” Chism said.

Police told WREG she was taken to the hospital and her condition is not known right now.

As Chism hopes she recovers, he advises others to stay safe.

“People need to be safe out there. Be aware of your surroundings. You never know,” he said.

As of right now, it’s unclear how many cars were stolen and no arrests have been made. We reached out to Olive Branch Police, but so far have not heard back.

This is an ongoing investigation.
