MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police arrested a woman who they say threatened two other women and two children with a gun.
Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a gas station on East Raines Road near Auburn Road.
A woman reportedly told police she and the suspect, identified as Monikka Burton, got into an argument. According to police, while they were arguing, Burton went to her vehicle and pulled out a black handgun.
Police say Burton pointed the gun at the woman and threatened to shoot everyone in the car, which included the woman’s mother and two children.
Memphis Police say officers saw Burton with the gun inside of her front jacket pocket before she went back to her car and put the gun under her seat.
Officers took Burton into custody. One of the officers went to Burton’s car and got the handgun– a 9 MM pistol– from under the front driver side seat.
No shots were fired.
Torbjoren Wesson was shocked to hear about what happened Wednesday in the parking lot of the Whitehaven gas station. The incident is a reminder to him of how quickly tempers can flare and arguments can turn to tragedies.
“She threatened… but that’s still, you know. You don’t do threats like that… to have people make threats. That’s the wrong threat to make,” Wesson said. “You argue with somebody, think it’s over with, and they come back shooting at you with a gun. So I think that’s a dangerous situation.”
Court records did not say what the argument was about.
We went to the address on the affidavit for Burton, but were told no one by that name lived there.
Burton has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault. She is out of jail on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, November 29th.
