(Memphis) – Lorenzen Wright’s family wonders what might have happened had a Germantown dispatcher followed up on a 911 call made from the pro-basketball player’s phone July 19, 2010.
In the background of the 911 call, there is cursing and gunshots before the phone goes dead.
“Hello. I don’t hear nothing but gunshots. Hello,” says the Germantown dispatcher on the 911 call.
Eight days after the call, the dispatcher told a supervisor about it.
It quickly led to Wright’s body.
“The 911, they dropped the ball, no dispute,” says Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion.
She, along with Wright’s father and his ex-wife, filed a $2 million lawsuit against Germantown, Collierville and Shelby County.
The case was scheduled to be in court Monday, but instead ended in mediation.
Collierville and Shelby County were dropped from the lawsuit.
Germantown settled for $135,000.
After lawyer fees, $85,000 will be divided equally among Wright’s six surviving children.
“That’s not enough for a life,” says Marion.
Deborah Marion isn’t happy with the settlement but says she, Lorenzen’s dad, and his ex-wife, Sherra Wright, never could agree on things.
“Had we had all our ducks in a row, we could have had a jury trial instead of this mediation stuff,” says Marion.
Sherra Wright said by phone Monday that the case needed to be resolved.
It comes as a national program, TV One Celebrity Crime Files, is set to air a segment Monday night profiling Lorenzen Wright’s murder.
Lorenzen Wright’s mom is a part of the Celebrity Crime Files special. She hopes it will lead to tips in the case, especially since it is a national show.
Sherra Wright and Lorenzen Wright’s children were not interviewed for the segment.
Sherra says no one ever got back to them.
