UPDATE: THURSDAY 1:17 PM: A winter ice storm warning has been issued from 6:30 p.m. Wednesday until midnight Thursday for most of West Tennessee, including the cities of Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Millington, Covington, Ripley, Tiptonville, Union City, and Dyersburg.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The ICE STORM WARNING, WINTER STORM WARNING and WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY continue across the News Channel 3 viewing area.
So far, this storm has lived up to its name. It has produced ice accumulations that are bringing down large trees, powerlines and causing widespread power outages.
Temperatures at Memphis International Airport have been staying in the 32-33 degree range while outlying areas are ranging from the mid 20s to low 30s.
This is an ongoing storm precipitation expected to continue off and on into the overnight hours. Rain will mix with sleet then snow overnight before tapering off early Friday morning.
Additional ice accumulations are possible during this period.
Sleet and freezing rain accumulations will have an impact on travel, trees and power outages.
The National Weather Service urges drivers if you have to be out on the roads to have patience, take it slow, give ample space to other drivers and leave early if you can. Travel conditions are expected to range from dangerous to impossible in certain areas. Stay alert to rapidly changing conditions on Thursday.
