(Memphis) Fallen Memphis Police officer Martoiya Lang was honored Wednesday as 2013 Officer of the Year by the Kiwanis Club.
Lang was shot and killed while on duty December 14, 2013.
“Our hearts are heavy still, she will never be forgotten, we know that her living was not in vain,” said Lang’s mother Vivian Taylor Woods who accepted the award with Lang’s daughter Nia.
The event was emotional for many including MPD Director Toney Armstrong, “I can honestly say it’s an event that literally changed my life.”
Only one of Lang’s four daughters was there as the award was presented.
“She would’ve said that she appreciated everything that everybody is doing for her and that she thanks everybody for their concerns,” said Nia Lang.
Lang was in good company.
Memphis Firefighter Brian Latessa was honored for saving an 82-year-old woman from a burning home in July.
Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies Brain Luna and Donald McDonald were honored for investigating a tip that led to the arrest of a sex trafficker.
“It’s one of those things, we could’ve looked away. You know it was off campus and we usually just handle everything that is on campus. They brought that to us and we went ahead and went through with it, which I’m glad we did,” said Luna.
