MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was shot and killed in Midtown on Sunday night, police say.
The shooting occurred on 42 North Claybrook Street around 9:45 p.m.
The victim was taken to Regional One in critical condition where he later died from his injuries.
Police say three people have been detained but have not confirmed any charges.
A woman who lived next door said the victim had just returned to his apartment from being out of town.
“He just came in from out of town. He wasn’t at home probably 15 minutes and the next thing I know, I heard gunshots,” she said. “I couldn’t help him.”
According to people who live in the apartment complex, there are only two ways to get in and out. One of the ways is through a keypad which requires a code to enter and exit the front and back gates. The other way is if someone who lives here lets you in.
“The driver was a girl,” one woman said. “So, I guess she brought them in here. She got locked in the gate because she didn’t know the code. So, he had to probably let them in with a remote because he had a remote to the gate.”
The neighbor also said she saw four people enter the victim’s apartment. However, MPD said only three people were detained. A black sedan was later towed from the scene.
