MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was shot in what appeared to be an attempted carjacking in the Cooper-Young neighborhood in Midtown Friday morning.
MPD responded to the shooting around 4 a.m. on the 900 block of Cox Street near Young Avenue where a man was struck several times.
He was taken to Regional One in non-critical condition.
The photo below shows that some of the holes went into the vehicle while others went outward. Close friends of the victim say he fired back at the suspects in an attempt to save his life.
A neighbor who works with WREG said he heard multiple gunshots from what sounded like two different weapons.
“I ran to the window, and I saw my neighbor’s truck running. I texted him to see what was going on not realizing that he was the victim,” he said.
Police say the suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle. One of the suspects was wearing a gray hoodie.
While the suspects managed to get away, neighbors say it appears one of them may have left something behind.
“There’s a cellphone laying in the street,” the neighbor said.
This news is especially troubling to Joe Calhoun, who lives down the street.
“In 2018, I was carjacked after I got home,” Calhoun said.
Calhoun says he wasn’t injured but he learned his vehicle was used in another carjacking that resulted in a murder.
“There were six people – 13, 14, 15, 19, 21, and 23. Children? Children. They should’ve been at home somewhere,” Calhoun said.
Calhoun says it’s upsetting to see this type of violence once again take place in his neighborhood.
No arrests have been made. This is an ongoing investigation.
