MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was injured in a shooting in Midtown, Memphis Police say.
Officers responded to a shooting at the Belvedere Garden Apartments on North Belvedere near Madison Avenue at around 5 p.m. Thursday evening.
Police say a woman was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.
Sources tell WREG the woman was shot in front of her children, and that the shooting was a result of gang retaliation.
The suspect, who police say was wearing a black hoodie, reportedly fled the scene.
Just last month, a man was killed at the the complex, leading to frustration across the community.
Duncan Aiken lives near the apartment complex and says the day before the woman was shot, dozens of rounds were fired in the area, forcing his family to take cover.
“There is no regard for children running around or anybody that’s just trying to live their life in peace,” Aiken said.
Feet away from the Belvedere Garden Apartments, Memphis Police responded to a car theft at Marco’s Pizza on Tuesday night.
A police report revealed the victim told investigators she left her rental car running while picking up an order. Two days later, the vehicle was found abandoned in East Memphis.
Many are left questioning what will it take to see change.
“We’re looking to talk to the police department, neighborhood watch, mayor office,” Aiken said. “We see problem, we see the issue. It’s about facing it and trying to make it Memphis.”
Memphis Police say the investigation is ongoing.
