MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A thirteen-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot early Wednesday morning in Frayser.
It happened in the 4000 block of LeWeir around 5 a.m. Police say the 13-year-old girl was taken to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.
She is expected to be okay.
However, they’re still looking for the person responsible.
Memphis Police officers spent several hours speaking to people inside a home on Leweir street. We’re told by neighbors several teenagers live inside that home.
Natoria Carpenter says her son attends school in the area. She works with Memphis Lift – an organization dedicated to fighting for kids’ right to quality education. However, she says lately it feels like they’re fighting another battle, as well.
“There needs to be a sense of urgency because the last couple of weeks we have seen nothing but kids being killed or shot by guns,” Carpenter said.
This incident comes after a series of shootings involving children across the city.
Friday, an 18-month-old was shot and killed after an argument between her mother and another woman. Last week, a 17-year-old was killed and a three-year-old toddler was injured in a separate shooting.
Both happened in North Memphis.
“How do elected officials sleep at night knowing this is going on every day in our communities and we elect these people,” Carpenter said.
No suspect information is available at this time.
