(Helena-West Helena, AR) Phillips County deputies made a big bust that could put a dent in farm equipment thefts in the area.
They arrested two people after a thousand-gallon tank, nearly full of diesel fuel, was found at a home near the Helena-West Helena city limits.
That’s not the only thing deputies found and more arrests are expected.
A thousand-gallon diesel fuel tank was hard to miss, sitting under the car port of a Phillips County home on the outskirts of Helena-West Helena, Ark.
Even though someone tried to cover it with a tarp, it was identified as the fuel tank stolen from a farm on Highway 44.
On January 27, when sheriff’s deputies went to the home, homeowner Gary Sherman told them he had no idea where the three-quarters full tank came from, but it wasn’t his.
The tank was taken to the Phillips County sheriff’s office and the owner claimed it.
Deputies went back to the same house January 28th after getting a report of a stolen trailer.
They found the trailer and lots of stolen property inside a storage shed.
Investigators said the stolen goods, including tools, came from other unsolved burglaries.
Gary Sherman told deputies people “bring stuff to his house at night without his knowledge.”
While Gary Sherman was not arrested, a man hiding inside the house was, as well as woman who tried to run away.
Friday we tried to talk to Gary Sherman at the house on Old Little Rock Road.
A man claiming to be Gary Sherman’s son came to the door.
“Is Gary here? Naw…he done left,” said Chris Sherman.
Chris Sherman said he works on a towboat and couldn’t answer any of our questions.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, I don’t. I been on a boat for a month,” said Chris Sherman.
Investigators believe whoever stole the diesel storage tank intended to sell the fuel.
The Phillips County Sheriff didn’t want to be interviewed on camera, saying the investigation is far from over and more arrests are likely.
