MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person is dead after a violent carjacking in Whitehaven Wednesday afternoon.
The Feronia Square Townhomes quickly became a crime scene after police were called to reports of a violent carjacking.
According to police, they got to the scene before 6 p.m. and found a 39-year-old victim. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
MPD says preliminary information indicates this was a carjacking and two masked suspects fled the scene in the victim’s black 2018 Dodge Charger.
The male victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive his injuries.
John Brown, who lives at the Feronia Square Townhomes, said the victim fell down and started shooting back. He said at least ten shots were fired.
“A young man pulled up, got out his car, and was walking between that alleyway right there, and as he was walking, another car pulled up and started shooting at him,” Brown said. “These people don’t care, and it’s so sad. It is really sad. Nothing like that has ever happened over here since I’ve been here. It’s very quiet here.”
Police are not sure if the victim lived here or if he knew the suspects. That’s still under investigation. But they do have a message for the public.
“Some people want to defend their property, but sometimes you have to give up your property because you can get another car but you can’t get another life,” said Sgt. Louis Brownlee with the Memphis Police Department.
