MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shooting on I-240 and Mt. Moriah Road sent two people to the hospital early Friday.

According to reports, the shooting happened around 2:40 a.m. Officers found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Regional One Health in critical condition.

The suspect was not on the scene when the police arrived. A vehicle sat on the road with nearly all of its windows shot out.

This shooting comes one week after the Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced they increased the number of state troopers in the Memphis and Shelby County area.

“Citizens, they see us out when we’re out, and they’ve noticed crime trying to change a little bit,” said Trooper Devonte Quinn of Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Interstate shootings are up in Memphis this year. Memphis Police say so far in 2023, there have been 23 shootings on area interstates. At the same time last year, there were 15.

Mayor Jim Strickland recently said he’s confident the increased law enforcement presence will help prevent more incidents like this from happening.

Police have not given a motive for this shooting. No arrests have been made.
