MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Saturday night, numerous cars gathered in front of a Memphis fire station and did donuts, causing the entire street to be shut down.
The cars gathered outside of Memphis fire station 19, located in North Memphis on Chelsea Avenue, around 10 p.m. This made it hard for firefighters to be able to respond to any calls during that time.
Video footage captured cars revving their engines and doing donuts in the road. People were also seen hanging out of either the sunroof or car windows.
WREG spoke to those who say drivers should be given the chance to perform the often-times dangerous stunt, while others say the act is illegal for a reason.
One woman said the city was put at risk. “You are affecting everybody as a whole– our community. You need to really think about what you’re doing.:
Other neighbors like Arthur Jordan say, despite the burnouts being illegal and risky, it’s not all bad. “There’s nothing else going on out here. People will come out to the, enjoy it if they do it.”
Jordan suggests city leaders provide drivers with a designated area.
WREG has reached out to Memphis Police, who told us they were aware of the video and were looking into the matter.
