One dead in Whitehaven shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A family is mourning after their relative was killed in broad daylight during a carjacking on Easter Sunday.

Resurrection Sunday, for many, is a day of new life and celebration, but for one Memphis family, it is a day that will also be known as a day of grief and sorrow.

Memphis Police said a man was shot and killed at Royal King Store on West Raines Road. An employee said he heard about six gunshots.

“Then I come out, and it was like police and somebody laying down by the door… dying,” the employee said.

The victim’s family stood by helplessly as police looked for clues. However, officers quickly discovered the most important clue was right above their heads. Surveillance cameras across the parking lot show a clear vision of what happened. Memphis Police said this was the result of a carjacking.

Surveillance footage showed three male suspects armed with guns attempting to carjack the victim and then shoot him. The suspects then got into a tan 4-door sedan with passenger-side damage and drove off northbound Westmount Road.

Newly released video shows the victim, who is seen wearing a white shirt, standing next to the suspect. He appears to be looking in his pocket when he notices something in the suspect’s hand. 

It’s unclear what the object is, but there is a struggle between the two. Out of nowhere, a second suspect wearing a red jumpsuit ruthlessly shoots the victim multiple times. 

Police say another suspect wearing a white shirt and blue pants also opened fire, killing the victim. Social media posts by family members say the victim is a recently engaged father.

While the victim lay bleeding to death in the business, police say the suspects never took the car. Several people living nearby say they’ve seen the suspects at the store before.
