(Memphis) The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services has released a summary of statistics, as well as case files for children who died on its watch in 2013.
The records released online this week are part of a new reporting method DCS has established.
According to DCS, 245 children died in 2013. Of those children, 232 were non-custodial, while 13 were in custody. No children in DCS custody in 2013 died as a result of abuse or neglect.
In more than 50% of the non-custodial cases, DCS had prior contact with the family. Also, in more than 90% of those cases, there was alleged neglect. More than half of those allegations were unsubstantiated.
