MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have identified a suspect they say fired shots at a man who caught him breaking into his car in East Memphis.
Carye Humphrey, 18, is wanted on a warrant for his arrest charging him with six counts of aggravated assault, burglary of a motor vehicle, and theft of a firearm less than $2,500, Memphis Police said.
Officers responded at noon Saturday to a call in the 4600 block of Poplar, near Perkins Extended.
Police said a man caught a burglar breaking into a Dodge Charger, alerted him, and began recording on his cell phone.
That’s when the burglar turned around and fired shots at the man recording him, police say. Some shots hit a nearby business with several people inside.
No injuries were reported. The suspect got into a black Nissan Altima with a busted rear window and fled east on Poplar.
A 9mm handgun was stolen from the Charger’s glove box, a police report stated.
Police released a photo of the suspect. Anyone with information should call 901-528-CASH.
Year-to-date in 2023, there have been 9,047 auto burglary reports in Memphis. At this time last year, there were 8,002, MPD said.
