MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Since the end of July, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised more than $50 million for The ALS Association.
ALS, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal disease that attacks the central nervous system.
Muscle control is lost and patients can eventually become totally paralyzed.
Early symptoms often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing.
There is currently no cure.
The ALS Association is the only national non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease on all fronts.
They provide assistance for families dealing with ALS, and also run a global research program focused on the discovery of treatments and eventually a cure.
