THESSALONIKI, Greece. — Cemetery workers and visitors frantically dug up a coffin after they claim to have heard a woman screaming from the inside after being “buried alive”.

A 49-year-old woman who suffered from cancer was pronounced dead and buried Saturday evening in Peraia Cemetery.

The cemetery worker told police he could hear muffled shouts and banging coming from the plot where the woman was buried.

Metro reported that when finally digging up the coffin the woman had died right before being rescued.

Doctor Chrissie Matsikoudi stated that he did several tests before pronouncing her death.

A coroner will be carrying out a separate examination on the body, according to the report.

Relatives of the woman say they are considering filing a complaint against the doctors who first pronounced her dead.
