(Alpine,MS) People who live in the Alpine area still trying to grasp what took place in their quiet, rural community last night.
They’re shocked how the Mayes search ended, but glad Alexandria and Kyliyah Bain are now out of harm’s way.
“I know these woods like the back of my hands. From here it’s just miles around. It’s unbelievable he trekked through here with those two girls like that,” said Ronald Roberts.
Aileen and Ronald Roberts live directly behind Adam Mayes’ home, less than a mile away.
They now believe Mayes trekked through the woods with the Bain girls to get to the area were he was discovered by a SWAT team Thursday night.
Friday, they wanted to see for themselves were Mayes ended his life, and where the Bain girls were rescued.
“I’ve lived her my whole life, 66 years and we’ve never had an anything like this. It’s unbelievable,” said Ronald Roberts.
They say law enforcement officers have been on their property a number of times, searched hunting cabins in the area and been up and down the roads around them every day.
Last night they knew something was different.
“I came out of the house after 7pm and there were sirens everywhere you turned,” said Ronald Roberts.
They were relieved to learn the search was over, and the sisters were safe.
“We feared for their lives. A happy ending,” said Aileene Roberts.
The Roberts say the worst part about all of this is that three lives were wasted.
