BARTLETT, Tenn. — Durham officials met with the six municipal school district superintendents Thursday morning at Bartlett’s School Board Building.

The municipal school districts are Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Arlington, Millington, and Lakeland.

Shelby County Schools has dealt with more than 40 bus crashes this school year and a bus driver caught on-board with pot.

Collierville Superintendent John Aitken said Collierville oversees transportation for the municipal districts. He admitted there have been some growing pains, but there have not been many bus issues for the municipal districts.

“We’re in November. We need to get a little more consistency in the drivers, and we addressed that, but we’re pressing on,” Aitken said.

Aitken said the municipal districts meet with regional Durham officials weekly.

Thursday’s meeting was similar to the meeting Durham held with Shelby County Schools last week.

Aitken said Durham promised third party background checks and more frequent drug testing. Also, all current drivers will be re-screened before November 17th.

Aitken said Shelby County Schools could be experiencing more problems given that the district is larger and has more miles to cover.

The municipal districts and Shelby County Schools are in four-year contracts with Durham.

Durham told WREG the meeting was “productive” but did not comment further than that.

“We made the commitment to work with Durham. They need to work with us and kind of help with some of our concerns, and I think we’ll get there,” Aitken said.
