MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Loved ones laid to rest a child hit and killed by an SUV in Raleigh.
About a dozen students from Coleman Elementary filed onto a school bus Saturday to say goodbye to 11-year-old Joshua McDowell.
“The kids wanted to participate, the kids wanted to show their love,” said Coleman Elementary parent Isador Harris.
The 11-year-old, and his friend Darryl Howard, were killed last Saturday.
Police say Sparkel Hastings slammed her car into them off Raleigh-Millington Road.
A week later, you could barely find a parking spot outside Joshua’s funeral.
“They fully don’t understand it, but you try your best to try to let them know, death comes and death goes,” said Harris.
Harris worked with Durham Bus Services to get a bus to take the kids from their Raleigh neighborhood to the funeral in South Memphis.
If the bus had not been available, some of the kids would not have been able to say goodbye.
Joshua attended Coleman last school year.
“We’re trying to get as many people there as possible that knew Josh,” said Harris.
Joshua is a child whose life was stolen in tragedy, and whose death is hard for his former schoolmates to understand.
“I sat down with her this morning and explained, ‘hey you lost a friend,” said Harris.
Hastings was not supposed to be driving, her license was suspended.
Hastings now faces reckless vehicular homicide charges and heads to court Monday.
