MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Many people hold the highest respect for those in the military, but according to the Shelby County Sheiff’s Office, that’s the last thing Lee Morrow did.
Deputies said Morrow stole checks from Alan Joyner, who told officials he noticed something was off last January.
Someone had used his checkbook to write seven checks totaling $675 from his Regions checking account.
Joyner told investigators he hasn’t had the checkbook since before he was deployed to Kuwait with the Tennessee Army National Guard in 2013.
He also said he didn’t know anyone named Lee Morrow, whose name kept showing up on the checks.
It turns out Joyner was closer to Morrow than he thought. Morrow was actually Joyner’s brother’s ex-roommate.
Joyner told deputies prior to his deployment, he had dropped off some of his belongings at the home.
Detectives were able to track Morrow down by fingerprints found on the checks.
“It’s not an uncommon case let’s just say that,” Chip Washington with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said.
He said this case is a good reminder to be vigilant when monitoring your finances.
“Always take a look at your accounts, your checking accounts. You get statements every month, you can always call the bank to get automated statements when something doesn’t look right or doesn’t seem right or just call us and we’ll handle the rest,” Washington said.
