MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Schools told WREG it’s continuing with its food programs as usual, even after its nutrition services director stepped down last month.
Tony Geraci had been with the district since fall of 2011. There was some speculation when he resigned.
SCS confirmed Wednesday that Geraci resigned for personal family reasons.
SCS agrees Geraci was instrumental in pushing forward healthy eating improvements. For example, there’s a fellowship that pays youth to grow the food that goes into their school lunches. The district has also worked to continue connecting schools with local farms.
“Our staff members have stepped up and picked up the work, and they’re going to continue those programs throughout the rest of the school year,” SCS spokesperson Kristin Tallent said.
Parents told WREG they hope to continue seeing healthy foods, like vegetables, on their kids’ lunch trays.
SCS has not yet advertised the vacant position, but said it will begin doing so in upcoming weeks.
